In a shocking incident in Daudkandi, a construction worker was brutally beaten to death with rods and hammers after being falsely accused of stealing a chicken. The victim, identified as Saeed, was reportedly called from his home before the attack and later pronounced dead at the local health complex.
Saeed’s parents, Mohammad Alauddin and Samsun Nahar, told Prothom Alo that the incident occurred in their village of Maligaon. “Yesterday evening, a chicken belonging to Abdul Razzaq, a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw driver from the village, went missing. Razzaq suspected our son Saeed and called him to his house,” they explained.
According to witnesses, Saeed was attacked by Abdul Razzaq, his two sons Mohammad Rabbi and Mohammad Zahid, Omar Sani, Shawon, Jasim Uddin, and several other villagers. Using rods and hammers, they inflicted severe injuries on Saeed before leaving him. He was rushed to the Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Local residents expressed shock and demanded justice. Jasim Uddin Bhuiyan of Maligaon, along with Abdus Sobhan and Abdul Adud Mia of Anuakhol, told Prothom Alo that such extreme violence over a missing chicken was unimaginable. “No one can accept that someone could be beaten to death with hammers and rods over a single poultry. The perpetrators must be brought to justice,” they said.
Daudkandi Model Police Station’s investigating officer, Mohammad Samsul Alam, confirmed that two suspects, Omar Sani (25) and Jasim Uddin (45) of Maligaon, had been arrested in connection with the murder. “A formal murder case will be filed. The body of the deceased Saeed is being prepared for post-mortem at Cumilla Medical College Hospital,” he stated.
The incident has raised serious concerns among villagers about rising incidents of mob violence and the need for swift judicial intervention. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm while the investigation continues.
