A 32-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was killed in a violent altercation in Sitakunda Upazila, Chattogram, on Friday night, leaving the local community in shock. The incident occurred around 9:00 pm in the Jahanabad area of Madambibirhat union, reportedly over a seemingly minor dispute that quickly escalated into deadly violence.
The victim, Md. Raju, was a resident of Jahanabad and worked as an auto-rickshaw driver. According to police and local sources, the conflict initially arose just before iftar, when members of two neighbouring families had a disagreement over the planting of banana trees beside a roadside. Although local residents intervened and temporarily resolved the dispute, tensions lingered in the community.
Later that evening, the situation escalated once more. Around 9:00 pm, Raju reportedly got into a confrontation with several individuals from the opposing family. Witnesses said that what started as a verbal argument quickly turned into a physical fight. Raju was pushed and beaten, and during the clash, he collapsed after sustaining severe injuries.
Local residents immediately took him to the nearby BSBBA Hospital in an attempt to save his life. However, doctors at the hospital declared him dead upon arrival, stating that he had likely succumbed to his injuries before reaching medical care.
Police were alerted through the national emergency helpline 999 and recovered the body from the hospital at around 1:30 am. In connection with the case, one person, identified as Azam Ali, has been detained for questioning.
Md. Mohinul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Sitakunda Police Station, told our representative that preliminary medical reports indicate Raju died before being brought to the hospital. He added that it remains unclear whether the death resulted solely from the altercation or if other factors were involved. “We are investigating whether this was an accidental death during the fight or a deliberate act of homicide,” he said.
The body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. As of now, no formal complaint or case has been filed by the victim’s family, though police have assured that legal action will follow once the investigation is complete.
The incident highlights how minor local disputes can quickly escalate into serious violence if not properly managed. Residents of the area have expressed concern and demanded a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure justice.
