At least 20 people, including women and children, were injured when a bus carrying wedding guests lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch in Chuagacha, Jessore, on Saturday morning (24 January). Of those injured, 10 are reported to be in a critical condition and have been admitted to the 250-bed Jessore General Hospital for advanced treatment.
The incident occurred at Tengurpur turn on the Chuagacha-Maheshpur highway. Local sources and eyewitnesses reported that the bus, operated by ‘Gorai’ Transport on the Jessore-Monihar–Khulna route, was returning from a wedding in Bathangachi village, Maheshpur, carrying the groom’s party to Naupala, Jessore. While negotiating the Tengurpur turn, the driver failed to notice a speed breaker, causing the vehicle to skid off the road and fall into a ditch.
Approximately 65 passengers were on board at the time. Most sustained injuries of varying severity, ranging from broken limbs to deep cuts and bruises. Several passengers remain in a serious condition, requiring specialised medical care.
Emergency response teams, including Chuagacha police and the fire service, were promptly alerted by locals and rushed to the scene. Injured passengers were initially admitted to Chuagacha Upazila Government Model Hospital, where primary treatment was administered. Those in critical condition were subsequently transferred to Jessore General Hospital for advanced care.
Anwar Hossain, leader of the Chuagacha Fire Service, stated, “The wedding guest bus lost control at Tengurpur turn and fell into a ditch. We immediately conducted a rescue operation and ensured all injured passengers were taken to hospital without delay.”
Dr Akheri Zaman, emergency physician at Chuagacha Upazila Government Model Hospital, confirmed, “Several of the injured are in critical condition and have been referred to Jessore for specialised treatment.”
Chuagacha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rezaul Karim added, “Upon receiving the report, police arrived at the scene and assisted the fire service in a joint rescue operation to safely evacuate all passengers.”
