A Russian drone strike targeted a bus carrying mine workers in Ukraine, killing at least twelve people and injuring seven others. The attack occurred on Sunday, 1 February, in the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region, according to Ukraine’s Minister of Energy.
Minister Denys Shmyhal posted on Telegram, describing the assault as a “vile attack on workers in the energy sector.” He added: “Today, the enemy carried out a reprehensible attack in the Dnipro region, targeting fuel industry personnel. Twelve mine workers lost their lives, and seven others were wounded in this act of terrorism.”
Local authorities reported that the strike took place in the town of Ternivska. Emergency services released video footage online showing a burnt-out bus overturned at the roadside, highlighting the severity of the blast.
DTEK, a leading Ukrainian energy company, confirmed in a statement that the victims were its employees returning from their workplace at the time of the strike. The company expressed profound grief over the incident, calling it “an outrageous act against civilians performing their professional duties.”
Earlier on Sunday, regional officials in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia reported that at least nine people were injured in separate Russian attacks targeting a maternity hospital and a residential building. The incidents mark a continuation of Russian assaults on civilian infrastructure in the region.
These attacks come ahead of the second round of trilateral talks involving the United States, Russia, and Ukraine, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the timing of these high-level discussions, which are expected to focus on de-escalation and humanitarian concerns.
