Rajasthan, India — At least 20 people have died after a passenger bus caught fire while travelling between the western Indian cities of Jaisalmer and Jodhpur on Tuesday afternoon, according to officials and local media reports.
The tragic incident occurred shortly after the vehicle departed from Jaisalmer at around 3:00 pm (09:30 GMT), carrying more than 50 passengers.
According to police reports, smoke began to emerge from the rear of the bus as it travelled along the highway. The driver pulled over to investigate, but flames engulfed the vehicle within moments, trapping many passengers inside.
“Nineteen passengers died in the bus and one succumbed to burn injuries on the way to Jodhpur,” said Senior Police Officer Rajesh Meena, speaking to AFP.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) confirmed the death toll, citing a local lawmaker, and reported that the bus had stopped after passengers raised the alarm about the smoke.
Local broadcaster NDTV, quoting police sources, suggested that a short circuit may have triggered the fire, though this detail has not yet been independently verified.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, saying he was “deeply distressed by the loss of lives” and prayed for the “speedy recovery of the injured.”
From the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), Modi announced compensation for the victims’ families:
| Beneficiary Category | Compensation Amount | Equivalent (USD) |
| Families of the deceased | ₹200,000 each | ≈ $2,252 |
| Injured survivors | ₹50,000 each | ≈ $563 |
State and local authorities have also pledged additional assistance, while teams of police, medical workers, and fire officials are continuing to investigate the cause of the blaze and identify the victims.
Videos circulating on social media showed firefighters and locals attempting to douse the flames, while others helped retrieve victims from the charred remains of the bus.
“It all happened within seconds,” said one eyewitness to local media. “The bus stopped, smoke came out, and suddenly the fire spread everywhere. There was shouting, chaos, and people jumped out through the windows.”
India’s roads remain among the most dangerous in the world, with frequent accidents caused by overcrowding, speeding, poor maintenance, and vehicle safety lapses.
According to official data from 2023, India recorded:
| Category | Number Reported (2023) |
| Total road accidents | 480,000+ |
| Fatalities | Nearly 173,000 |
| Injuries | Around 463,000 |
Experts have long urged for stricter vehicle safety standards, improved driver training, and better enforcement of traffic laws to prevent such tragedies.
Authorities in Bolti village, near Pokhran, where the incident occurred, are now conducting forensic tests to determine the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary findings point to an electrical fault or overheating in the engine compartment, but officials have not ruled out other mechanical failures.
Fire officials reported that the bus was completely gutted within minutes, making identification of several victims challenging. DNA testing has been ordered to assist families awaiting confirmation.
The Rajasthan government has announced that a full inquiry will be launched into the incident, including an assessment of the bus operator’s safety record and emergency preparedness.
As rescue operations concluded late Tuesday, rows of burnt belongings and melted metal stood as grim reminders of one of Rajasthan’s deadliest transport disasters in recent years.
