Businessman or Politician? Mahbub Alam’s Wealth Debated

In the run-up to the 13th National Parliamentary Election, Mahbub Alam, the candidate of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) for Laxmipur-1 (Ramganj) constituency, has publicly disclosed the full details of his assets. In his officially submitted affidavit, Alam reported total movable assets exceeding BDT 1.05 crore, highlighting his financial transparency and adherence to electoral regulations.

Alam, who holds an MBA, identifies himself professionally as a businessman. His wealth primarily derives from private business ventures, shareholdings, and other financial investments. In the affidavit, he detailed his assets as follows:

The affidavit further confirms that Alam owns no agricultural or non-agricultural land, vehicles, plots, or flats. During the last financial year, he paid BDT 150,000 in income tax, with an estimated annual income of approximately BDT 1.5 million.

Politically, Mahbub Alam hails from an established political family. He is the son of the late Azizur Rahman of Narayanpur, Ichapur Union, Ramganj Upazila, who currently serves as General Secretary of Ichapur Union BNP. His brother, Mahfuz Alam, previously acted as an information adviser to the Caretaker Government. Alam also spent a significant period working in Australia, where a substantial portion of his current wealth was accumulated.

Speaking to the press, Alam stated: “All my assets are fully legal, and this represents my first income tax return submitted for electoral purposes. I have disclosed this information to ensure full transparency and accountability.”

Political analysts note that the combination of business acumen, carefully managed assets, and a strong political family background positions Mahbub Alam as a credible candidate. Experts further observe that such transparent declarations not only enhance voter confidence but also strengthen public trust in democratic processes.
