Published: 09 Feb 2026, 09:04 am

A prominent local businessman, Rafiqul Islam Sarkar, aged 50, was fatally shot by unidentified assailants in Raipura, Narsingdi, on Sunday night. The tragic incident occurred around 9:30 pm in Gajipura, a locality within Charamdhuya village of the Raipura sub-district.

Rafiqul Islam, the son of Haji Mangal Mia, was returning home from the local market when the attackers struck. According to eyewitnesses, a few rounds of gunfire were directed at him from behind. He collapsed on the spot and was subsequently rushed to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at approximately 10:30 pm.

The deceased leaves behind his wife, Mamtaz, who currently serves as a Union Parishad member for Ward No. 6, along with other family members.

Background of the Dispute

Initial investigations suggest that the killing stemmed from a personal disagreement. Rafiqul’s brother, Mostakim, revealed that the conflict involved individuals named Rifat and Nayon. “A minor disagreement escalated into hostility between Rafiqul and Rifat–Nayon group,” Mostakim said. “They had allegedly been preparing to attack Rafiqul, and unfortunately, they carried out their plan that night.”

The police are treating the case as a premeditated attack motivated by a family dispute, rather than a random act of violence.

Police Statement

Probir Chandra Ghosh, Officer-in-Charge of Raipura Police Station, confirmed the preliminary findings. He stated, “The incident appears to have arisen from a familial conflict. The body has been sent to the Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. Legal action will be taken based on formal complaints and ongoing investigations.”

Authorities are now investigating the backgrounds of the suspects and searching for any accomplices who may have been involved in the crime. Residents of Charamdhuya village expressed shock and fear following the incident, urging local law enforcement to ensure safety in the community.
