Bangladesh national football team coach Xavier Cabreira has expressed cautious optimism over the availability of Hamza Chowdhury for the team’s upcoming fixtures against Vietnam and Singapore. The Leicester City midfielder, now a pivotal figure for Bangladesh, has been sidelined since the first week of March due to injury, with a full recovery expected to take six to eight weeks.
Speaking at the Bangladesh Sports Press Association (BSPA) Iftar event at Paltan Handball Stadium, Cabreira told reporters that he maintains regular communication with Hamza and the Leicester City medical team. He added that Hamza’s rehabilitation is progressing very well, raising hopes that the player could return to the field by mid-March.
“If everything continues according to plan, we could see Hamza in action for Bangladesh’s final Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore on 31 March,” Cabreira said. Prior to that, Bangladesh will face Vietnam in a friendly match on 26 March. There is a possibility that Hamza may travel directly to Vietnam without returning to Dhaka if he is cleared to play in both fixtures. Cabreira commented, “We are positive about Hamza. We hope his recovery will continue smoothly.”
The coach also shared encouraging news about another expatriate player, Shomit Som. Regular discussions with Som indicate that the midfielder is keen to join the national camp. Cabreira hopes that Som can begin the camp in Dhaka, ahead of the team’s departure to Vietnam. The preliminary national camp is scheduled to commence in Dhaka on 16 March, following the conclusion of the Bangladesh Football League on 14 March. The squad will undergo three to four training sessions in Dhaka before travelling.
Given Vietnam’s current FIFA ranking of 108, Cabreira acknowledged that the friendly match would pose a significant challenge for Bangladesh. He had proposed high-ranking opponents in preparation for the year-end SAFF Championship, a suggestion accepted by the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF).
Regarding his contract and future with the team, the Spanish coach remains measured. “I still have two months remaining on my contract. The Vietnam and Singapore matches are very important. We will discuss my next steps with the BFF president afterwards. There is no need to rush decisions,” he said.
Reflecting on his four and a half years in Bangladesh, Cabreira expressed admiration for the country’s culture, Ramadan celebrations, and footballing community. “I feel fortunate to experience the team, players, and coaching staff while enjoying the culture here. I always try to respect and embrace this culture fully,” he said.
Cabreira also extended best wishes to the Bangladesh women’s football team competing in the Asian Cup in Australia, praising their fighting spirit and confidence in strong performances. He further highlighted his deep appreciation for the Bangla language and culture, noting its importance during International Mother Language Day.
