Candidacy to Be Cancelled for Breaching Electoral Code: Election Commissioner

Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar has declared that tough action will be taken against any violation of the electoral code of conduct in the forthcoming national parliamentary election. He stated that no candidate would be issued a show-cause notice; instead, once a breach is confirmed, the candidate’s nomination will be cancelled immediately.

He made these remarks on Monday afternoon while addressing a workshop titled “Identifying Challenges Faced by Polling Officials and Approaches to Overcome Them” held at Sayra Garden in Bandar Upazila, where he attended as the chief guest.

The Election Commissioner stressed that there would be no negligence in election preparations or management. Magistrates would remain vigilant and take necessary action, including imposing fines or ordering imprisonment where applicable. He further noted that once the election schedule is announced, no posters will be allowed on the streets, and a level playing field will be ensured for all candidates.

He added that a monitoring cell would be operating under the Election Commission to oversee security and law and order at polling centres. With coordination between law enforcement agencies and the administration, the cell would be able to take immediate decisions whenever required.

The workshop was also attended by Director General of the Electoral Training Institute Md Hasanuzzaman, Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Md Raihan Kabir, Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mizanur Rahman Munshi, Deputy Secretary Md Mostafa Hasan, and Regional Election Officer Yunus Ali.
