A new name has entered the annals of FIFA World Cup history: Cape Verde. The small African island nation has secured its place in the main tournament of the World Cup for the first time. On Sunday night, at the Praia National Stadium, Cape Verde defeated Eswatini 3–0 to secure their ticket to the 2026 United States–Mexico–Canada World Cup.
In addition to qualification, Cape Verde has set another record. With a population of just over 500,000, it has become the second smallest nation by population to ever qualify for the World Cup, after Iceland in 2006 (approximately 300,000).
| Record | Nation | Population | Year of World Cup |
| Smallest by population | Iceland | ~300,000 | 2006 |
| Second smallest | Cape Verde | ~500,000 | 2026 |
The capital’s Praia National Stadium became a centre of celebration on Sunday. Over 15,000 spectators filled the stands, painted in blue, cheering continuously for their team, the “Blue Sharks”.
| Minute | Player | Event |
| 48 | Livramento | First goal |
| 54 | Willy Semedo | Second goal |
| Injury Time | Stopira | Third goal, match sealed 3–0 |
The Cape Verde Football Federation first participated in World Cup qualifiers in 2000, only 25 years ago. Despite limited infrastructure, constrained budgets, and years of preparation, the nation has finally secured a place in the 2026 World Cup.
Cape Verde, covering just 4,000 square kilometres, now holds the record for the smallest geographical area to qualify for the World Cup. Previously, this record belonged to Trinidad and Tobago, which played in the 2006 World Cup in Germany (5,000 sq km).
| Record | Nation | Area (sq km) | World Cup Year |
| Smallest by area | Trinidad & Tobago | 5,000 | 2006 |
| New record | Cape Verde | 4,000 | 2026 |
2025 also marks the 50th anniversary of Cape Verde’s independence. Qualifying for the World Cup in this milestone year is seen as a dream realised for the nation.
Under the leadership of Coach Babista, who once played for Spain’s Badajoz Club, the team has made history. Speaking after the match, he said:
“This team has not only played football, it has revived the nation’s belief. We have proven that even a small country can dream big.”
Cape Verde’s remarkable achievement highlights the power of determination, national unity, and sporting excellence, marking an unforgettable milestone in both the country’s history and world football.
