A violent clash during an election manifesto reading in Sherpur’s Jhenaigati Upazila has left Maulana Rezaul Karim, a leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, dead. Rezaul Karim served as the Secretary of the Sri Bardi Upazila branch of the party. In response, a murder case has been filed against over six hundred individuals allegedly involved in the incident.
The case was lodged late on Friday night at 12:00 am by the deceased’s wife, Marzia Begum, at Jhenaigati Police Station. According to the complaint, the confrontation erupted on Wednesday, 28 January 2026, during a joint election manifesto event for the Sherpur-3 constituency (Sri Bardi–Jhenaigati). Reports indicate that a dispute over seating arrangements escalated into a physical altercation between members of the BNP and Jamaat, ultimately leading to a broader violent clash.
At least 30 people were injured in the incident. Rezaul Karim was initially admitted to Sherpur District Health Complex, but he succumbed to his injuries en route to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Hafizur Rahman, the district leader of Jamaat, claimed that Karim was brutally beaten with bricks, resulting in his death.
Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Nalitabari Circle, Afsan Al Alam, confirmed that a case had been registered by the deceased’s spouse and that operations to arrest the suspects are ongoing. Authorities have stated that identification of the accused is proceeding rapidly and further updates will be released as investigations continue.
The local community and political figures have expressed deep concern over the incident, urging all parties to maintain peace and restraint to prevent further escalation.
