Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin stated that unless the existing electoral law is amended, the next general election will proceed under the current system. His remarks came in response to a journalist’s query regarding the proportional representation (PR) method during a pre-meeting press briefing in Khulna on Saturday.
The CEC made these comments ahead of a coordination meeting with election officials from the Khulna region in preparation for the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
| Topic | CEC’s Response |
| Election System | “If the current law remains unchanged, the election will proceed under the existing rules.” |
| Proportional Representation (PR) | “The Election Commission conducts elections based on laws and the constitution determined by politicians. If the constitution is amended, we will act accordingly. Until then, preparation under the existing system is both normal and expected.” |
| Misinformation and AI Challenges | “Fake news and misinformation on social media are emerging as threats. The use of AI before the election is a major challenge. We are working seriously with national and international experts to address it.” |
| Shapla Symbol Inquiry | “That’s not a registered symbol with us. Symbols are assigned only to registered parties. The NCP has applied and is under review. Once a decision is made, you’ll be informed.” |
The CEC stressed that the Election Commission’s role is to conduct elections, not to make or change laws. He emphasised that any amendment to electoral procedures must originate from the political sphere:
“Our job is to implement the law, not to determine it. Politicians decide what the law and constitution should be. We are prepared to work under whatever framework they set.”
The meeting in Khulna was attended by:
| Position | Presence |
| Chief Election Commissioner | A M M Nasir Uddin (Chief Guest) |
| Additional Regional Election Officer | Khulna Division |
| Senior District and Upazila Election Officers | Present |
The gathering focused on election preparations and strengthening coordination ahead of the national polls in the region.
The Election Commission continues to prepare under the current legal framework, while remaining vigilant regarding technological threats and disinformation that could impact the integrity of the electoral process.
