Charlie Puth Addresses Criticism Ahead of Super Bowl LX National Anthem Performance

American singer and songwriter Charlie Puth is set to perform the national anthem at Super Bowl LX, but the announcement sparked a wave of debate on social media. Political commentator Link Lauren posted, “Man, we’ve fallen from when Whitney Houston sang at the Super Bowl. Charlie Puth? He’s not gonna give us vocals, I’m afraid.” The post quickly went viral, drawing both support and criticism, with many arguing that comparing any artist to Whitney Houston is unrealistic and unfair.

Puth responded with humility, stating, “I’ll never claim to be as good of a singer as Whitney Houston ever was. But I assure you we’re putting a really special arrangement together—in D major. It’ll be one of my best vocal performances.” Lauren later softened his stance, replying, “Can’t wait! I wish you nothing but success, but just miss our big belting divas like Whitney. Make sure they know it’s D major and not B minor. Cheers, Char!”

The timing of this exchange is significant. The NFL officially announced on 30 November that the 33-year-old artist will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” on 8 February 2026 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Produced in partnership with Roc Nation, the pregame lineup will also feature Brandi Carlile performing “America the Beautiful” and Coco Jones delivering “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” each accompanied by dedicated ASL interpreters.

Puth’s performance coincides closely with the release of his fourth studio album, Whatever’s Clever!, scheduled for 6 March 2026. This will be his first full-length album in nearly four years. Fans have already been treated to a preview through the lead single “Changes,” released in October.

The upcoming performance and album release mark a pivotal moment in Puth’s career. Fans are eagerly anticipating both events, and Puth demonstrates that with talent and humility, criticism can be transformed into positive energy.
