Chattogram University Student Union Election Postponed

Following the delay of the Rajshahi University Central Student Union (RACSU) elections, the Chattogram University Central Student Union (CHAKSU) and Hall Union elections have also been postponed. After demands from some candidates, the election originally scheduled for 12 October has been rescheduled to 15 October.

Official Announcement

  • On Tuesday, 23 September, Professor AKM Fariful Haque Siddiqui, Secretary of the Election Commission, announced the decision in a press conference.
  • He stated:

“The CHAKSU election was supposed to be held on 12 October. However, due to the holiday period, candidates would only have five working days to campaign. During a discussion yesterday with candidates and general students, this concern was raised.”

  • Prof. Siddiqui added that the matter was considered seriously and coordinated with the Chattogram University administration. The Election Commission decided in a morning meeting to hold the elections on 15 October instead of 12 October.

The upcoming CHAKSU elections will see candidates contesting for various positions as follows:

Position Number of Candidates
Vice President (VP) 25
General Secretary (GS) 22
Joint General Secretary (JGS) 22
Sports & Games Secretary 12

The total number of registered voters for this election is 27,637, with polling scheduled for 15 October. Notably, the last CHAKSU election was held on 8 November 1990.

Earlier, the Rajshahi University RACSU election was also postponed. The university issued a notice stating that the election, originally planned for 25 September, will now be held on 16 October.

The notice explained that the full session of the RACSU Election Commission 2025 reviewed the situation prior to the elections and concluded that conditions were not conducive for holding the elections.

Two main reasons were cited:

  1. A declared “complete shutdown” of teachers, officers, and staff at Rajshahi University.
  2. Insufficient participation of the required number of teachers, officers, and staff to manage the election process effectively.

This rescheduling ensures that candidates have adequate time to campaign and that university administration can provide sufficient support for smooth conduct of both RACSU and CHAKSU elections.
