Chelsea Appoints Liam Rozennier On Six-Year Deal

Chelsea Football Club have confirmed the appointment of 41-year-old Liam Rozennier as their new head coach, signing the relatively unknown manager to a six-year contract. Rozennier, who has just three years of senior coaching experience and has never previously managed in the Premier League, succeeds Enzo Maresca, who departed amid internal conflicts despite winning both the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup in his debut season.

Rozennier announced his agreement to join Chelsea during a farewell press conference at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, a club he had been managing. Shortly after the announcement, the move was formalised. Reflecting on his appointment, Rozennier told Chelsea’s official website:

“Being named head coach of Chelsea is a tremendous honour. This club has a distinct identity and a proud history of winning trophies. Preserving that identity and instilling those values on the pitch every match is a responsibility I will embrace fully.”

Both Chelsea and Strasbourg are owned by the investment group Blueco. Since Blueco assumed control of Chelsea in 2022, Rozennier becomes the club’s fourth permanent head coach under their tenure. He stated that his decision to leave Strasbourg was motivated by his deep emotional connection to the club and his desire to inform them personally of his departure.

Rozennier enjoyed a professional playing career in England, featuring in both the Premier League and the Championship with clubs including Fulham, Reading, and Hull City. He began coaching under Philip Cocu and Wayne Rooney at Derby County and briefly served as interim manager there in 2022 following Rooney’s departure. Subsequently, he managed Hull City for 18 months before being dismissed. In July 2024, he took over Strasbourg and led the team to a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1 last season.

Meanwhile, Maresca’s exit came shortly after disputes within the club surfaced. In the interim, Chelsea’s U21 coach Callum McFarlane oversaw a 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Sunday. Under Rozennier, Chelsea face Fulham in the London Derby on Wednesday.

A summary of Rozennier’s managerial career is provided below:

Year Club Role Key Achievement/Note
2022 Derby County Interim Head Coach Took over briefly after Rooney’s departure
2022–2024 Hull City Manager 18-month tenure; subsequently dismissed
2024–2025 Strasbourg Head Coach 7th place finish in Ligue 1
2026– Chelsea Head Coach Six-year contract; Premier League debut

Chelsea’s decision to appoint a relatively inexperienced coach on such a long-term deal reflects their ambition to establish stability and long-term planning, signalling a bold shift in strategy following a period of managerial turbulence.
