Chhatra League Leader Released Following Family Tragedy

In a case that has sparked significant public debate and poignant scenes of grief, Jewel Hasan (Saddam), a leader of the Chhatra League, was released from Jashore Central Jail on Wednesday afternoon. His release comes just four days after the tragic deaths of his wife and infant son—a loss he was forced to mourn from behind bars under highly restrictive conditions.

Saddam, who served as the president of the Bagerhat Sadar Upazila unit of the Chhatra League, was granted six months’ bail by the High Court on Monday. The Jashore Central Jail authorities, led by Senior Jail Superintendent Asif Uddin, confirmed his departure from the facility at approximately 2:00 PM.

A Heartbreaking Final Farewell

The circumstances surrounding Saddam’s incarceration took a harrowing turn on 23 January, when police discovered the bodies of his 22-year-old wife, Kaniz Suborna (Shornoli), and their nine-month-old son, Sejad Hasan (Nazif), at their residence in Sabekdanga village. While Shornoli was found hanging, the infant lay lifeless beside her.

Initially denied parole to attend the funeral, Saddam was granted a mere five-minute window on the evening of 24 January to view the remains of his family. In a scene that drew sharp criticism across social media and national press, the bodies were transported in an ambulance to the prison gates to allow the briefest of goodbyes.

Political Background and Legal Timeline

Saddam’s legal troubles began following the collapse of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024. His journey through the correctional system eventually led him to Jashore, where he remained until his recent bail.

Contention at the Prison Gates

The release was marred by a lack of transparency from prison officials, which drew the ire of local journalists. Reporters waited for several hours at the gates, seeking confirmation of the release, only to be met with silence and evasion from the authorities. Asif Uddin, an Assistant Commissioner of the Jashore District Administration currently holding additional responsibility at the prison, eventually confirmed the release in the evening, citing the completion of all legal formalities.

Upon returning to his village on Wednesday evening, Saddam immediately visited the graves of his wife and son. According to his brother, Shahidul Islam, the scene was one of overwhelming sorrow as the former student leader collapsed in tears. The family has requested privacy, noting that the administration had advised them against speaking extensively to the media during this period of mourning.
