Chief Adviser to Meet BNP, Jamaat and NCP Today

Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus is scheduled to hold separate meetings today with the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the Nationalist Citizens’ Party (NCP) to discuss the upcoming 13th Parliamentary Election and the prevailing political situation.

The announcement was made on Saturday, 30 August, during a briefing in front of the Chief Adviser’s residence, Jamuna, by his Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

According to the briefing, the Chief Adviser will sit with the three parties at different times on Sunday (today):

Time Political Party Agenda
3:00 PM Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Election discussions & current political situation
4:30 PM Jamaat-e-Islami Political and electoral dialogue
6:00 PM Nationalist Citizens’ Party (NCP) Political and electoral dialogue

Shafiqul Alam explained that the decision was taken at a meeting on Saturday at Jamuna, chaired by Dr Yunus himself. Present at the meeting were several advisers, National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman, and the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant on Home Affairs, Khoda Bakhsh Chowdhury.

In an official statement, the Office of the Chief Adviser reaffirmed that the next national election will be held in the first half of February 2026.

The statement declared: “This is the firm commitment of the interim government to the people of Bangladesh. Any conspiracy, obstacle, or attempt to delay or sabotage the election will be firmly resisted by the interim administration and our patriotic, democracy-loving citizens. The will of the people shall prevail, and no sinister force will be allowed to obstruct our democratic journey.”

When asked whether the current political turbulence posed risks to holding elections, the Press Secretary responded: “You may obtain statistics from the Police Headquarters. Compare the law and order data with that of last year and see whether the situation has worsened. We have already instructed the police to provide regular updates. In our assessment, there is sufficient environment for elections to take place. The national election will indeed be held in the first half of February 2026.”

This series of dialogues with major political parties underscores the interim government’s determination to conduct elections on schedule despite ongoing political challenges.
