In a violent attack in Chittagong’s Fatikchhari upazila, a worker of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed and another injured in a shooting incident on Saturday evening. Police reports indicate that the assailants, arriving on a motorcycle, opened fire before fleeing the scene, according to statements from local residents.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 pm in Shahnagar village, Dighir Para area, under Lelung Union. The deceased has been identified as Jamal Uddin, aged 38, son of the late Mohammad Yusuf of Basharat Ali Mistri’s household. The injured, Nasir Uddin, aged 35, has been admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
Additional Superintendent of Police for the Hathazari Circle, Md. Tarek Aziz, confirmed the incident to local media, stating: “The assailants opened fire on the road near Jamal’s residence and fled immediately. We are conducting investigations to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.”
According to eyewitness accounts, two men on a motorcycle targeted both Jamal and Nasir, firing multiple rounds before escaping. Residents described the attack as sudden and terrifying, with the gunfire sending local villagers into a state of panic. The police have cordoned off the area temporarily and are collecting CCTV footage from nearby locations to trace the attackers.
Locals also noted that Jamal Uddin was a known Jamaat-e-Islami worker and had been active in community and political activities. Police have suggested that the attack may be linked to local political or communal tensions, although investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact motive.
