Chittagong Port Drops One Spot in Global Container Rankings

Chittagong Port has slipped one position in the global rankings for container traffic. According to a list published by Lloyd’s List, an international shipping analysis organisation, Chittagong now ranks 68th among the world’s top 100 ports, down from 67th last year.

Experts have warned that without infrastructure development, adoption of modern technologies, and improved services, Bangladesh’s main seaport could fall further behind in international competition.

Despite the ranking drop, Chittagong Port handled 3,275,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers in 2024, representing a 7.37% increase compared to the previous year.

Top Global Ports

Rank Port Country Container Traffic (TEUs)
1 Shanghai Port China 51,500,000
2 Singapore Port Singapore
3 Ningbo Port China
68 Chittagong Port Bangladesh 3,275,000

Experts emphasise that while traffic growth is positive, maintaining and improving global competitiveness requires continuous investment in modernisation and service efficiency.

Chittagong Port remains the primary gateway for Bangladesh’s maritime trade, but analysts note that rising competition from regional ports necessitates strategic upgrades to maintain its standing on the global stage.
