Clash Between Two Jamaat Factions in Rajshahi

A violent altercation erupted between two factions of Jamaat-e-Islami in Rajshahi city on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred around 7:45 pm near the Hetem Khan Museum corner, causing panic among local residents.

According to local sources, the dispute initially began over the sale of a motorcycle. Leaders and supporters from Ward 9 of the party reportedly engaged in a verbal argument over the timing of the transfer of ownership documents. The disagreement quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, with both sides eventually resorting to throwing bricks and stones at each other. During the clash, one faction’s shop and a motorcycle were damaged.

The groups involved in the conflict have been identified as the Md. Mominul Islam (Mona) group and the Rashedul Hasan Parvez group. Parvez serves as the general secretary of Ward 9 of the Rajshahi City Jamaat, while Mona is a member of the same party.

Eyewitnesses reported that the confrontation began over the condition that the motorcycle papers would be delivered at a later time. The disagreement rapidly escalated, drawing in supporters from both factions. Residents in the area quickly intervened to restore order before the Malo Para Police Outpost of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) arrived to inspect the scene. By late evening, authorities confirmed that the situation had returned to normal.

When contacted, Imaj Uddin Mondal, Secretary of Rajshahi Metropolitan Jamaat, downplayed the incident as a personal dispute. “The confrontation arose between two individuals over the purchase and sale of a motorcycle. It is not an issue between factions of Jamaat-e-Islami. Personal disputes should never be interpreted as organisational conflicts,” he said.

Md. Gaziur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, confirmed the details, stating, “Two individuals and their associates became involved in an argument over the motorcycle transaction, which escalated. Police intervened promptly and restored order. The situation is currently under control.”

The incident underscores the potential for minor personal disagreements to escalate into public disturbances, especially when party supporters are involved. Local authorities emphasised that community vigilance and rapid response helped prevent a larger escalation.
