Clash Erupts Between BNP and Jamaat in Natore

A violent clash broke out between supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in Natore’s Beraigram Upazila on Saturday, 14 February. The incident occurred in the Dhanaidah market area of Nagar Union, resulting in multiple injuries on both sides.

Among the seriously injured is Maulana Md. Hasinur Rahman, the Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s 4th Nagar Union unit. According to local sources, he sustained severe injuries during the confrontation and was initially taken to Amina Hospital in Bonpara town for emergency treatment. After receiving preliminary care, he was transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced medical attention. Medical staff reported that Maulana Rahman sustained injuries to multiple parts of his body but that his condition, while serious, was stable.

The conflict reportedly stemmed from political tensions surrounding upcoming local elections. Bigram Police Officer-in-Charge Abdus Salam, along with local residents, stated that on Friday afternoon, a Jamaat worker named Sabbir was assaulted by local BNP supporters at Dhanaidah market. Retaliating the following morning, Jamaat supporters reportedly attacked BNP leader Asab Sarkar. The retaliation escalated, drawing both groups’ members into a full-scale confrontation, with sticks and improvised weapons reportedly used during the clashes.

Local authorities intervened to restore order, and additional law enforcement units were deployed to prevent further violence. No arrests have yet been reported, although an investigation has been launched to identify those involved and recover any weapons used during the incident. Police have warned that any further escalation could result in strict legal action.

Political analysts note that localized disputes of this nature, particularly during the pre-election period, often risk rapid escalation into more serious incidents if tensions are not managed promptly. Residents of Dhanaidah market expressed concern over the disruption caused by the clashes, emphasising the impact on local businesses and daily life.
