Clash in Kushtia Leaves Four Shot, Several Injured

A violent clash over territorial control in Kumarkhali Upazila, Kushtia left at least four people shot and ten others injured on Sunday evening, local authorities confirmed. The incident has sparked tension in the area, prompting a heightened police presence.

The confrontation took place around 5:30 p.m. in Ber Kalua, a village within Koya Union, when longstanding rivalries between two local groups escalated into gunfire.

Victims of the Shooting

The four individuals shot during the clash are reported to be supporters of Rashu Member’s faction in the ongoing local power struggle:

  • Azam Sheikh, 54, son of Amzad Sheikh
  • Rabbi Sheikh, 22, son of Babu Sheikh
  • Sarukh, 20, son of Muktar Sheikh
  • Jony Sheikh, 21, son of Liton Sheikh

All four were rushed to Kumarkhali Upazila Health Complex for initial treatment before being transferred to Kushtia 250-Bed General Hospital due to the severity of their injuries. Several of the victims are reported to be in critical condition.

Background of the Conflict

Police and local sources indicate that the rivalry between the two factions—the group led by Iarul, accused in a police murder case, and Rashu Member’s supporters—has been ongoing for an extended period, centred around territorial dominance in the village.

Kumarkhali Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Jamal Uddin, told reporters:

“This attack stemmed from an ongoing territorial dispute. We have reinforced police presence in the area and are taking all necessary legal measures against the perpetrators.”

The incident has caused significant unrest among local residents, who expressed fear for public safety and urged authorities to take swift action to prevent further clashes.
