In Sonargaon, Narayanganj, a clash erupted between the supporters of two BNP leaders over the control of sand depots. At least four people were injured and several houses were set on fire.
The clash took place on Thursday (6 November) from 8:30 pm for three continuous hours in Ashariyar Char area of Pirojpur Union. Locals said both sides looted and set fire to each other’s houses.
Police and local sources said that the two brothers have a long-standing dispute over dominance and control of the sand depot in the area. On Thursday night, their supporters engaged in stone-throwing and arson. Firefighters and police were also attacked while trying to control the fire.
The clash involved leadership from Abdur Rauf, joint general secretary of Sonargaon Upazila BNP, and his younger brother, Abdul Jalil, organizational secretary of Pirojpur Union BNP. Police arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control.
Inspector (Investigation) Rashedul Islam of Sonargaon Police Station said both BNP leaders were taken to the police station. Additional police have been deployed in the area, and legal action will be taken.
SI Sarwar Hossain of Sonargaon Police Station reported that at least four houses were set on fire and the four injured have been admitted to the local hospital.
Senior officer Zahedul Islam of Sonargaon Fire Station stated that their two units worked for nearly an hour to control the fires due to multiple locations catching fire.
