Coach Recalls Jaima Rahman’s Sporting Talent

Barrister Jaima Rahman—widely recognised in Bangladesh’s political and social landscape as the daughter of Tarique Rahman—has recently drawn renewed public attention, not for her legal or civic work, but for her early sporting prowess. Fresh discussions surrounding her alleged opportunity to join the youth setup of Chelsea Women have prompted reflections from her childhood coach, shedding light on her athletic abilities during her formative years.

In response to the growing conversation, Jaima Rahman’s former coach, Mohammad Hakim, offered a detailed recollection of her sporting background in a Facebook post on Monday morning.

Hakim, who coached Jaima during her time at the International School Dhaka (ISD), described her as a naturally gifted and exceptionally driven athlete. According to him, she excelled across multiple disciplines, including football, swimming, and sprinting. “My belief in Jaima Rahman’s abilities is not new,” he wrote, emphasising that his assessment stems from years of direct observation and coaching experience.

He recalled that Jaima consistently stood out among her peers, not only due to her technical skills but also because of her remarkable athleticism and determination. “She was an outstanding swimmer and often outpaced even male students in running events,” Hakim noted. Her ability to push beyond physical limits and maintain a competitive mindset distinguished her from others at a young age.

Hakim further highlighted her confidence, discipline, and relentless pursuit of excellence as defining traits. These qualities, he argued, would make it entirely plausible for her to receive an opportunity at a professional or elite youth level. “If she has said that she was invited to play for Chelsea Women’s youth team, I would not be surprised at all,” he remarked, adding that her talent and capability were of that calibre.

Beyond her early sporting achievements, Jaima Rahman has since established herself as a successful barrister and an active voice in several social causes. Her work spans women’s empowerment, cyber security awareness, environmental protection, and advocacy for preserving playgrounds and recreational spaces for children and young people.
