College Lecturer Found Dead in Rented Flat in Bogura

Police in Bogura have recovered the body of a young female college lecturer from her rented apartment in the Chak Farid area of the district town. The deceased, identified as Fabia Tasnim Sidhi, aged 29, was a lecturer in the Zoology Department at Bogura Government Shah Sultan College. Her death has triggered shock and concern among colleagues, neighbours and students, prompting a formal investigation.

The incident came to light late on Thursday night. According to police and local sources, Fabia lived with her mother in a rented third-floor flat in a four-storey building owned by Dr Rashedul Hasan. Her mother had travelled to their ancestral home in Mymensingh a few days earlier, leaving Fabia alone in the flat. When she became unreachable after Thursday afternoon, the family grew worried.

Fabia’s mother attempted several times to contact her daughter throughout the day. Receiving no response, she rushed back to Bogura and arrived at the apartment around 10 pm. Despite repeated knocking on the door, there was no answer. Fearing something was wrong, she informed the police. Officers from Bogura Sadar Police Station arrived promptly and, upon forced entry, discovered Fabia’s body in the bathroom.

Police confirmed that blood was found flowing from her nose at the time of recovery, and there was a visible injury mark at the back of her head. These details have raised suspicions regarding the cause of death, prompting authorities to proceed with caution. The body was recovered around 12:30 am on Friday and later sent to the morgue of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Media), Atowar Rahman, confirmed the incident on Friday morning. He said the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death were not immediately clear and that investigators were waiting for autopsy results to determine whether foul play was involved. “The initial information we received suggests injury marks, but we cannot draw conclusions until we receive the forensic report,” he said.

Inspector (Investigation) Mahfuz Alam of Bogura Sadar Police Station stated that an unnatural death case has already been registered. He emphasised that further legal measures will be taken depending on findings from the ongoing investigation. “We have spoken to family members and neighbours. At this stage, no cause of death can be confirmed,” he added.

Fabia Tasnim Sidhi had joined Shah Sultan College approximately a year and a half ago after passing the 41st BCS examination in the education cadre. Colleagues describe her as a dedicated academic and a soft-spoken individual. The news of her sudden death has left the college community in deep sorrow. Several faculty members expressed disbelief, noting that she had been present at work only days earlier and showed no signs of distress.

Neighbours reported that Fabia generally kept to herself and led a quiet life. Many said they did not notice anything unusual on the day of the incident. However, police are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area and questioning residents in an effort to reconstruct her final hours.

This tragic event has raised broader concerns about the safety of women living alone in urban settings. Advocacy groups have called for a transparent and thorough investigation to ensure that any wrongdoing, if identified, is brought to justice.

The final determination of the cause of death now rests on the post-mortem report, after which police are expected to decide whether to proceed with a criminal investigation.
