Comilla police have arrested a court assistant public prosecutor (APP) along with another young man after seizing firearms, ammunition, and related equipment in a major operation. Authorities recovered a foreign-made pistol, two magazines, and a total of ten rounds of ammunition during the coordinated raids.
The operation began on Thursday morning in the Tomshom Bridge area of Comilla city, when police detained 36-year-old Ariful Islam. Officers recovered five bullets and a knife from him during the arrest. Following further questioning, Ariful revealed the residence of APP K I M Masudul Haque, also known as Masum, aged 51, where additional firearms and ammunition were reportedly stored.
Acting on this information, police conducted a search at Masudul Haque’s residence, uncovering a foreign pistol, two magazines, and five rounds of ammunition hidden in a wardrobe. Both Masudul and Ariful were subsequently taken into police custody.
Masudul Haque is known as a Jamaat-aligned lawyer and is the younger brother of A K M Emdadul Haque, the deputy emir of Comilla Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami. Ariful Islam is a resident of Dhormpur in the Adarsha Sadar area of Comilla.
Confirming the arrests, Inspector Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of the Comilla Sadar South Model Police Station EPZ outpost, said, “Preparations are underway to file cases against both individuals under the Arms Act. The operation was executed swiftly based on actionable intelligence provided by Ariful.”
Inspector Islam added that police found photographs of the firearms on Ariful’s mobile phone, which facilitated the tracing of the weapons to Masudul’s home. “We acted immediately on the information, ensuring the firearms were safely recovered and both suspects taken into custody,” he said.
A breakdown of the confiscated items and suspects is shown below:
| Name | Age | Residence | Items Recovered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ariful Islam | 36 | Dhormpur, Adarsha Sadar, Comilla | 5 bullets, 1 knife |
| K I M Masudul Haque (APP) | 51 | Tomshom Bridge, Comilla | 1 foreign pistol, 2 magazines, 5 bullets |
Efforts to contact A K M Emdadul Haque for comment were unsuccessful, as repeated calls went unanswered.
Meanwhile, Comilla district court’s public prosecutor, Kaimul Haque, told the press that he had been briefed by law enforcement. “Once we receive the official case documents, I will coordinate with the APP and report to the Ministry of Law. The ministry will then decide on his continuing duties as an assistant prosecutor,” he said.
Authorities emphasised that the arrests are part of ongoing measures to ensure court security and curb the illegal possession of firearms in the region.
