A commuter train derailment at Nangalkot Railway Station in Comilla has disrupted rail traffic on the Dhaka–Chittagong route, causing significant inconvenience to passengers. The incident involved the Mahanagar Express, which was travelling from Chittagong to Dhaka on Monday afternoon.
According to railway officials, the derailment occurred around 2:30 pm on 16 February 2026. Upon approaching Nangalkot Station, one of the train’s coaches went off the tracks, with four wheels on one side derailing. The mishap led to the immediate suspension of train services on the Dhaka-bound line from Chittagong, leaving travellers stranded and forcing emergency measures.
Jamal Uddin, the station master at Nangalkot, confirmed the incident, stating that the derailment affected a single coach’s two sets of wheels on either side. “Passengers faced considerable inconvenience,” he said. “Several were redirected onto alternative transport to reach their destinations on schedule.”
Efforts to recover the derailed coach are currently underway, with railway authorities working to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible. In the meantime, officials have advised commuters to plan for delays and to consider alternative routes where available.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of railway safety and infrastructure maintenance on Bangladesh’s busiest routes. While no casualties have been reported, the disruption underscores the need for vigilant track inspections and prompt response mechanisms to minimise passenger hardship.
