As Bangladesh goes to the polls for the much-anticipated 13th National Parliamentary Election on Thursday, the eyes of both domestic and international observers are firmly fixed on the outcome. This election is widely seen as a decisive moment, determining not only which party will assume power but also who will become the next Prime Minister.
At the centre of attention is Tareq Rahman, Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), who stands as a symbol of renewed political momentum. After 17 years in exile, Rahman returned to Bangladesh on 25 December last year, immediately becoming a pivotal figure in the evolving political landscape. Contesting from Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 constituencies, he has actively campaigned across the country, presenting voters with his vision for national reconstruction, economic stability, and law-and-order restoration.
Despite personal loss—his mother’s recent passing—Rahman has maintained a vigorous campaign schedule, engaging directly with the electorate and articulating BNP’s commitment to public welfare. Observers note that his widespread acceptance among voters has infused the party with a sense of confidence. BNP leaders have expressed expectations for a “peaceful electoral revolution,” projecting that the party could emerge with significant parliamentary representation.
Political analysts suggest that in the new electoral reality following the end of Sheikh Hasina’s government, BNP under Rahman has consolidated a strong position. Many experts predict that, if the results favour BNP, Rahman could emerge as Bangladesh’s next Prime Minister. He has emphasised that, beyond party interests, the nation and its citizens remain the foremost priority.
BNP election committee spokesperson and Rahman’s adviser Mahdi Amin stated, “The enthusiasm on the ground, voter turnout, and credible surveys all reflect widespread support for BNP across communities—Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, and indigenous groups alike. The election is set to be a celebration of democracy.”
While challenges remain—including allegations of opposition attempts to influence voters with financial inducements—Rahman’s team has called for disciplined, peaceful conduct by party activists at polling stations, reinforcing the importance of free and fair elections.
Rahman was seen smiling and confident ahead of polling day. On Wednesday, he inaugurated a “Free Animal Clinic” in Banani, Dhaka, continuing his long-standing patronage of the Bangladesh Animal Welfare Association, which provides free treatment for animals. That evening, he met with a delegation of Turkish parliamentarians observing the election. He also visited senior BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at Square Hospital, inquiring about his health. Rahman and his family are scheduled to cast their votes at Model High School and College in Gulshan.
