Continuous Rewards Through a Specific Prayer

A notable narration from Islamic tradition highlights a prayer that, when recited with sincerity, generates continuous spiritual rewards. The teaching is attributed to Ummul Momineen Jouayriyah (may Allah be pleased with her), who reported the guidance of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

The Prayer and Its Meaning

The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed Jouayriyah (ra.) to recite the following prayer:

Pronunciation:
Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, adada khalqihi, wa rida nafsihi, wa zinata arshihi, wa midada kalimatih.

Meaning:
“I glorify and praise Allah according to the number of His creations, in accordance with His pleasure, by the weight of His Throne, and the extent of the ink of His words.”

This supplication encompasses vast dimensions of glorification: acknowledging Allah’s perfection, His creation, divine pleasure, the Throne’s weight, and the innumerable words of Allah. It serves as a comprehensive dhikr that links personal devotion with universal scales of divine attributes.

Historical Context

Jouayriyah (ra.) narrated that one morning, the Prophet (peace be upon him) left her house while she was engaged in her morning dhikr. She remained seated on her prayer mat reciting her supplications. Hours passed, corresponding to approximately a quarter of the day. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) returned, he found her still immersed in her devotion.

He asked her whether she had remained in the same state since he left. When she affirmed, he remarked that the four words he had recited upon leaving her house had produced a reward equivalent to her continuous morning remembrance up to that point. This illustrates the profound spiritual weight and continuous benefit of reciting this particular prayer.

Spiritual Significance

The narration underscores several key points:

Persistence in Devotion: Sustained engagement in dhikr, even while performing daily activities, yields ongoing spiritual benefits.

Magnitude of Glorification: The prayer ties individual remembrance to cosmic and divine measures, emphasising that every word of praise resonates across the vastness of creation.

Integration of Intention and Action: Even brief acts, when performed with focus and sincerity, can have an effect equivalent to prolonged worship.

Aspect Significance
Glorification Recognition of Allah’s perfection and praise
Measurement Aligned with creation, divine pleasure, Throne, and words of Allah
Timing Morning dhikr generates continuous reward throughout the day
Effect Short recitation can equal extended remembrance when sincere

This narration highlights the importance of deliberate, mindful remembrance and glorification of Allah. Reciting this prayer regularly not only strengthens spiritual consciousness but also ensures that rewards continue to accrue, emphasising the mercy and generosity of Allah. By incorporating such supplications into daily practice, believers can cultivate a consistent and impactful spiritual routine that resonates beyond the immediate moment.

The story of Jouayriyah (ra.) and the Prophet (peace be upon him) serves as a timeless lesson: consistent, sincere dhikr—even in small amounts—can yield immeasurable, ongoing rewards.
