Controversial Facebook Post Lands Ex-Bangladesh Student Leader in Police Custody!

Police in Teknaf have arrested a former student political leader, Yahia Khan, following a series of allegedly offensive Facebook posts concerning the murder of Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi. The arrest occurred in the Baharchhara area late on Saturday night, 20 December.

Yahia Khan, formerly affiliated with the Bangladesh Chhatra League but currently banned from political activity, reportedly made a series of controversial posts on his personal Facebook account in the wake of Hadi’s murder. Among these posts, he provocatively wrote “OUT” in English, which drew widespread public outrage.

The Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Muhammad Saiful Islam, confirmed the arrest and detailed the nature of Khan’s posts. One of the most contentious issues arose regarding Hadi’s burial, which took place near the residence of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and other eminent personalities close to Dhaka University. Khan reportedly objected strongly to Hadi’s interment in that location, igniting further debate.

In one particularly inflammatory post, Khan labelled Hadi a “terrorist” and suggested that placing the grave of a so-called “terrorist” beside prominent figures would tarnish history, indicating that the university could never forgive such an act.

Beyond his social media activity, authorities allege that Yahia Khan has been actively involved in violent incidents linked to the banned student organisation. He is reportedly implicated in attacks on hospitalised students during anti-discrimination protests, demonstrating a pattern of aggressive and unlawful behaviour.

Police have filed charges against Khan under the relevant laws, and he has been remanded to the court as part of ongoing legal proceedings. Officer Saiful Islam emphasised that the arrest aims to uphold public order and prevent the spread of provocative content that could incite further unrest.

This incident has reignited debates over the limits of free speech on social media in Bangladesh, particularly concerning sensitive political matters and the treatment of national martyrs. Public reactions have been mixed, with some condemning Khan’s posts as deeply disrespectful, while others argue that legal action against individuals for online commentary raises broader questions about freedom of expression in the country.
