On Thursday, 22 January 2026, the first day of the election campaign for the Barguna-2 constituency witnessed controversy when a public rally organised by Jamaat-e-Islami at Douyatala School Field in Bamna Upazila became the site of inflammatory remarks. Afzal Hossain, a participant at the rally, asserted that “in a country with 80% Muslims, no non-Muslim or improper individual should be allowed to serve as a member of parliament.” His comments quickly circulated on social media, provoking widespread criticism both locally and online.
During the rally, Afzal Hossain formally joined Jamaat-e-Islami and further stated, “Do you want the Qur’an or the Vedas? If you want the Qur’an, Jamaat-e-Islami will establish a parliamentary system governed by Islamic principles. In areas with a Muslim majority, no non-Muslim or immoral parliamentary representative will be allowed. Whether the constitution exists or not, the rule of Allah’s Qur’an shall prevail.”
He also cited examples of justice under Islamic law, claiming, “If someone steals today, their hand will be cut off under Allah’s law. Would theft still persist in this area?” Addressing the Jamaat-nominated candidate, Dr Sultan Ahmed, he added, “Do not worry, Inshallah. People understand the meaning of religion, justice, and principles.”
Dr Sultan Ahmed clarified to reporters that Afzal Hossain was not a longstanding member of their party. “He is a newcomer who recently became acquainted with us. His remarks were made in the heat of emotion. Neither I nor any party leader issued such statements,” Dr Ahmed explained. He further noted that formal induction into Jamaat-e-Islami is a procedural process, which does not become effective immediately on the day of enrolment.
Md Palash Ahmed, Upazila Executive Officer and Assistant Returning Officer of Bamna, stated that the administration became aware of the incident afterwards. “If a written complaint is submitted, legal action will be taken in accordance with the law,” he confirmed.
The incident has sparked intense discussion among local residents and online communities regarding secularism, constitutional rights, and the role of religion in politics.
