Controversy Over Obscene Song Engulfs Nora Fatehi

Bollywood actress Nora Fatehi has recently faced a sudden setback in her career, becoming embroiled in both public criticism and legal complications. The controversy centres on her performance in the song “Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke” from the film Kedi: The Devil, in which she appears alongside veteran actor Sanjay Dutt. Since its release, the song has triggered widespread debate due to its explicit lyrics and provocative visuals.

The backlash prompted the producers to remove the Hindi version of the song from YouTube. However, this action has not shielded Fatehi, the film’s director, or other contributors from scrutiny. The National Commission for Women (NCW) in India has taken cognisance of the matter and initiated legal proceedings against those involved.

According to reports from Aajkal and other Indian media outlets, the NCW has made it clear during a Monday hearing that appeals to “creative freedom” cannot justify undermining the dignity of women. Despite the song being removed from public platforms, the Commission maintains that its content is excessively suggestive and obscene, rendering it unsuitable for public performance.

During the hearing, the film’s director Prem, lyricist Rakib Alam, and representatives of the production company were present. However, Nora Fatehi did not attend in person; her legal counsel appeared on her behalf, but the Commission did not accept this substitute. Fatehi has now been asked to appear physically before the Commission by 27 April, failing which further legal actions may be pursued.

The NCW chairperson expressed strong disapproval, stating, “The dignity of women cannot be compromised under the guise of creativity.” Although the filmmakers argued that they did not fully understand the implications of the song’s lyrics, the Commission rejected this explanation. Ultimately, the producers submitted a written apology and committed to undertaking initiatives supporting women’s empowerment over the next three months, with progress reports to be submitted to the NCW.

Public criticism of “Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke” erupted immediately after its release, both on social media and within the film industry. Many prominent figures highlighted the song’s poor taste and objectionable content. Subsequently, complaints were filed with the Delhi Police Cyber Cell, and a formal request was submitted to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to ban the song.
