Corruption Allegations Surface Against Two Mymensingh Council Officials

Mymensingh’s local administration is currently facing serious scrutiny following allegations of entrenched corruption against two senior employees of the district council. Accounts Officer Mahmudur Rahman Taslim and Senior Assistant Nurul Alam Noman have reportedly built a sprawling network of graft over many years, allegedly refusing to process official files without receiving bribes. The matter has escalated to the office of the Divisional Commissioner, with at least one complainant lodging a formal written complaint citing deliberate obstruction of development projects.

Sohail Ahmed, a local resident and affected party, has accused the officials of demanding substantial bribes before releasing funds for several local development schemes. “They refused to sign off on any project files without payment and bluntly stated, ‘No money, no work,’” he said. In desperation, residents are now seeking intervention from higher authorities to ensure proper governance.

Sources within the district council, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Taslim has been stationed in the same post for 17 years, while Noman has served for 13 years. This prolonged tenure has allegedly allowed them to operate with impunity, with locals referring to them as the council’s “don.” Reports suggest that they openly assert influence over even the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the council, and purportedly claim authority to influence postings within the ministry.

Allegations further indicate that these officials have amassed substantial wealth through commission-based dealings in various projects. Investigations reveal extensive property holdings in both urban and rural areas under their names or proxies, raising questions about the source of their fortune, considering their status as regular council employees.

Frustration among local contractors and citizens is reportedly mounting. Civic groups have demanded immediate transfers and exemplary punishment, asserting that ongoing corruption is undermining both the council’s reputation and the progress of development initiatives. If prompt corrective measures are not taken, local contractors have hinted at mobilising larger protests.

Repeated attempts to contact the accused officials have been unsuccessful. Taslim did not respond to phone calls, while Noman allegedly cut repeated calls.

The Chief Executive Officer of Mymensingh District Council, Shah Md. Kamrul Huda, commented: “I am newly appointed here, and the matter will be thoroughly investigated. If any wrongdoing is confirmed, appropriate legal action will be taken in accordance with the law.”
