In a significant anti-drug operation, the District Narcotics Control Department of Bagerhat apprehended a married couple in possession of a substantial quantity of yaba tablets. The arrests took place on Wednesday, 4 March, at the couple’s residence in Bade Karapara, Bagerhat Sadar Upazila.
The individuals detained are Syed Munir Hossain Khokon (41), son of Syed Nazrul Islam, and his wife Reshma Akter (34). Both have reportedly been under surveillance for their alleged involvement in local drug distribution networks.
According to Md. Mizanur Rahman, Deputy Director of the District Narcotics Control Department, the operation was executed following a tip-off. Authorities conducted a thorough search of the couple’s residence, uncovering a significant cache of drugs alongside cash and communication devices.
The recovered items are detailed below:
| Item | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Yaba tablets | 2,000 pieces |
| Cash | BDT 64,200 |
| Mobile phones | 2 units |
Following the successful seizure, Inspector S.M. Zafurul Alam filed a formal case at Bagerhat Sadar Model Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act.
Deputy Director Md. Mizanur Rahman elaborated, “We received verified information indicating that Munir Hossain Khokon had a large stockpile of yaba in his home. Acting on this intelligence, our team conducted a meticulously planned operation. This arrest represents a major disruption to the local drug supply chain. We are committed to continuing such targeted raids to curb the spread of narcotics throughout the district.”
Officials also emphasised that public cooperation is vital for the success of these operations. They urged residents to report any suspicious activity or information regarding drug distribution, ensuring rapid response by law enforcement agencies.
Local sources suggest that the couple had been supplying yaba to several areas in the district, making the seized 2,000 tablets a significant blow to the illicit trade. The market value of the confiscated drugs is estimated to be several lakh taka, highlighting the scale of the operation.
The District Narcotics Control Department affirmed that similar intelligence-driven raids will continue across Bagerhat, aiming to safeguard the youth and maintain public safety. The department’s ongoing efforts signal a resolute stance against narcotics proliferation and demonstrate a commitment to community welfare.
This arrest underscores the effectiveness of coordinated intelligence gathering and law enforcement action in tackling drug-related crime, while sending a clear warning to traffickers operating in the region.
