In a deeply disturbing incident that has shaken Manikganj, a young married woman was allegedly gang-raped by two Ansar personnel while seeking shelter at a hospital late at night. The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday night at Manikganj General Hospital, which has 250 beds and where the accused were stationed for security duties.
According to police and hospital sources, the couple, fearing for their safety during a late-night journey, arrived at the hospital seeking refuge. The two Ansar members, Shahadat Hossain (29) of Fulda Purpara village, Bhuapur Upazila, Tangail, and Abu Saeed (25) of Autiyapara village, Karimganj Upazila, allegedly coerced the husband into leaving the scene before taking the 16-year-old bride to the second floor, where the assault is said to have occurred.
The young victim, who is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital’s gynaecology ward, was married approximately seven months ago in Shibganj Upazila, Chapainawabganj. The couple now resides in Narayanganj, where the husband works at a thread manufacturing factory and transports thread via an electric van.
On the day of the incident, the young woman had accompanied her husband to visit relatives in Manikganj Sadar Upazila. By midnight, near Manikganj bus stand, their van ran out of battery. Seeking safety, the couple took temporary shelter under a tree in front of the hospital’s emergency department at around 12:30 a.m.
It was here that the accused allegedly lured the couple inside the hospital, invoking the guise of security concerns. The young woman’s husband was threatened and restrained while she was assaulted. Upon returning downstairs, she disclosed the crime to her husband, prompting hospital patients’ relatives to intervene and detain the accused until police arrived.
Hospital Residential Medical Officer Md. Tauhidul Islam confirmed that the accused were identified promptly, detained by police, and the victim underwent medical examination and treatment.
The young victim, speaking briefly from her hospital bed, said, “Two Ansar members subjected me to brutal abuse. I want proper justice.” Her husband added, “They threatened me and forcibly took my wife. They were wearing Ansar uniforms.”
Superintendent of Police Mohammad Sarwar Alam visited the hospital to speak with the victim on Monday afternoon. Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ekram Hossain stated that legal action would be taken and the victim’s family is preparing to file a formal case.
