Crackdown Planned on Extortion Networks

Bangladesh’s Home Minister, Salahuddin Ahmed, has announced that a nationwide drive against extortionists will begin shortly, with operations set to commence in the capital before expanding across the country. The initiative will be based on a comprehensive list of identified offenders prepared by law enforcement agencies.

The minister made the remarks on Wednesday (4 March) following a consultative meeting with senior officials at the headquarters of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Addressing journalists after the meeting, he confirmed that firm instructions had been issued to the police to prioritise action against organised extortion rings and individuals known for habitual criminality.

“We have directed the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to focus on two critical areas. Very soon, beginning in Dhaka, we will launch a special operation,” the minister stated. “A list of extortionists has been prepared, and necessary steps will be taken to bring them under the law.”

Focus on Law and Order

According to the minister, the crackdown will not be limited solely to extortionists. Law enforcement agencies have also compiled a broader register of individuals classified as terrorists, hardened criminals, and those accused of fomenting social disorder. The initiative aims to restore public confidence and ensure a safer business and civic environment, particularly in urban centres where allegations of organised extortion have been most prevalent.

Officials familiar with the plan indicated that intelligence units, local থানাস (police stations), and specialised branches have contributed to the preparation of the list. Surveillance data, prior case records, and community complaints were reportedly reviewed to identify repeat offenders and organised syndicates.

Planned Enforcement Measures

While specific operational details were not disclosed, authorities suggested that the campaign would include targeted raids, increased patrols, and closer monitoring of areas historically vulnerable to extortion, such as transport hubs, markets, construction sites, and business districts.

Below is a summary of the proposed enforcement framework:

Measure Description Initial Area of Implementation
Preparation of offender list Identification of extortionists, terrorists, and repeat offenders Dhaka
Special police operations Targeted raids and arrests based on intelligence Dhaka, expanding nationwide
Increased surveillance Monitoring of high-risk commercial zones Major metropolitan areas
Legal action Swift prosecution under existing criminal laws Nationwide

Public Reassurance

The Home Minister emphasised that the government is determined to tackle criminal networks that undermine economic stability and public safety. He urged citizens and business owners to cooperate with the authorities by reporting incidents of extortion and intimidation.

Security analysts observe that sustained enforcement and transparent legal proceedings will be essential to ensure the long-term success of the campaign. If effectively implemented, the initiative could mark a significant step towards curbing organised extortion and reinforcing the rule of law across Bangladesh.
