Cricket Prepares for European “Euro” Cup

The excitement of a European-style tournament, familiar to football fans through the UEFA Euro, may soon arrive in cricket. Cricket Ireland has already begun laying the groundwork for what could become one of Europe’s most high-profile cricket events: the Euro Nations Cup. The tournament aims to bring together Europe’s leading cricketing nations in a fast-paced, competitive Twenty20 format.

Brian McEnnis, Chairman of Cricket Ireland, has confirmed that the inaugural tournament could take place as early as next year. “I have discussed this initiative with stakeholders at multiple levels. The conversations are now at an advanced stage, and I am confident this tournament will materialise,” he said. McEnnis envisions the tournament as a platform to strengthen European cricket while giving players from emerging cricketing nations the chance to showcase their talent on an international stage.

The proposed tournament is expected to feature England, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, and Italy. Both men’s and women’s competitions are being considered, ensuring the event promotes inclusivity and growth across genders. The format will mirror other fast-paced competitions like the Asia Cup, allowing for high-intensity, spectator-friendly matches.

McEnnis initially proposed the concept to officials from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) during the T20 series against England last September. However, recent reports from Cricinfo indicate that the ECB has not formally participated in ongoing discussions regarding the Euro Nations Cup. Despite this, McEnnis remains confident about securing participation and support from both teams and broadcasters. “We are hopeful that broadcasters will show strong interest in both the men’s and women’s events,” he added.

In parallel, Cricket Ireland has strengthened its international commitments. Yesterday, the board announced long-term agreements with the Emirates Cricket Board and the Nepal Cricket Association. Under these agreements, Ireland’s national teams will regularly compete in white-ball series against the UAE and Nepal, providing more consistent international exposure. Additionally, from the 2026–27 season, ILT20 franchises will be required to include at least one Irish player in their squads, further promoting Irish talent globally.

The table below summarises the planned structure of the Euro Nations Cup:

Category Potential Teams Format Objective
Men’s England, Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands, Italy T20 Develop European cricket and showcase emerging talent
Women’s Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands, Italy T20 Promote women’s cricket and international exposure
Broadcast International sports channels Live & on-demand Maximise audience engagement and commercial potential

If realised, the Euro Nations Cup could become a landmark event in European cricket, offering fans a spectacle akin to football’s Euro, while providing players across Europe a platform to compete at a higher level. With discussions ongoing and infrastructure being put in place, cricket enthusiasts may soon have a new tournament to look forward to on the continental stage.
