Crisis Within: Israeli Military Suicide and PTSD Surge

Published: 17 Jan 2026, 06:28 am

Recent reports from the Israeli Ministry of Defence and several prominent healthcare institutions have revealed a catastrophic decline in the mental well-being of Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) personnel. Following two years of intensive military operations in the Gaza Strip, the prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and incidents of suicide among soldiers have reached unprecedented levels, creating a domestic crisis that mirrors the devastation on the front lines.

A Statistical Surge in Trauma

The conflict, which began following the events of 7 October 2023 and saw a formal ceasefire only on 10 October 2025, has left deep psychological scars. According to Ministry of Defence data, the rate of PTSD and related mental illnesses has surged by 40% since September 2023. Projections suggest this figure could skyrocket to a staggering 180% by 2028.

Particularly alarming is the condition of the wounded; of the 22,300 soldiers injured during the offensive, approximately 60% are currently diagnosed with PTSD.

The Dual Burden: Fear and Moral Injury

Ronen Sidi, a lead psychologist at Israel’s Emek Medical Center, identifies two primary drivers behind this epidemic. The first is the visceral, omnipresent fear of death experienced during urban warfare. The second, and perhaps more complex, is the concept of "Moral Injury."

Sidi explains that soldiers are increasingly haunted by their own actions during the conflict. The nature of the indiscriminate strikes and the resulting humanitarian fallout has led to severe internal conflict. This psychological distress arises when individuals act in ways that transgress their deeply held moral beliefs or expectations, leading to a profound sense of guilt and shame.

A Systematic Failure?

The 2025 annual report by Maccabi Healthcare Services underscores the scale of the demand for help. Nearly 39% of soldiers under their care are actively seeking mental health interventions, with another 26% reporting chronic, debilitating anxiety. One veteran noted that even with the cessation of major hostilities, the "noise of the conflict" remains constant in his mind.

Data presented to Israeli parliamentary committees reveals that between January 2024 and July 2025, 279 soldiers attempted to take their own lives. Furthermore, in 2024, soldiers accounted for nearly four-fifths (78%) of all suicides recorded in the country. Without immediate and comprehensive reform in veteran psychiatric care, Sidi warns that these figures will continue to climb.

The Broader Human Context

While the IDF grapples with its internal crisis, the external reality remains grim. In Gaza, the health ministry reports over 71,000 Palestinian deaths and the repeated displacement of 2 million people. Palestinian medical experts emphasize that the civilian population—subjected to years of extreme deprivation and terror—is suffering from a parallel, arguably more severe, mental health catastrophe. As the dust settles, it is clear that the psychological wreckage of this war will persist for generations on both sides of the border.
