Cristiano Ronaldo Accused of Proposing to Georgina with the ‘Wrong Ring’

Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez, after nine years of a committed relationship, have finally decided to take the next step towards marriage. On 11 August, the Portuguese football star’s long-time partner shared a photograph of her engagement ring, sparking global excitement. According to Spanish journalist Alberto Guzmán, the couple are expected to tie the knot after 19 July 2026.

However, amidst the joyous revelation, controversy has emerged over the nature of the ring. A Spanish jewellery expert has claimed that Ronaldo proposed with the “wrong type of ring.”

Spanish jewellery specialist Juana García Sánchez, speaking to the Italian daily Corriere dello Sport, expressed her professional critique: “This ring does not meet the criteria of a traditional engagement ring. The stone is too large and heavy, estimated at nearly 40 carats—an ideal size for a necklace, not a ring. Such a large stone makes wearing it uncomfortable and restricts finger movement. The setting itself is perfect, but the overall design is flawed.”

She went on to elaborate further: “The ring carries a big, bright stone, suitable for a celebration or special occasion, but it is impractical for everyday use. A proper engagement ring should be made of yellow or white gold, comfortable, and easy to wear daily, symbolising love and loyalty. In truth, Ronaldo’s ring is a cocktail ring, created to attract attention during social gatherings rather than being a daily emblem of commitment.”

The distinction between cocktail rings and engagement rings is both historical and cultural.

Aspect Engagement Ring Cocktail Ring
Origins Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome United States, 1920s
Design Smaller, elegant, comfortable Larger, bold, eye-catching stones
Purpose Symbol of love, loyalty, daily wear Statement jewellery for parties or special occasions
Cultural Symbolism Associated with lifelong commitment Linked to women’s independence and personal style during the Jazz Age
Material Gold (yellow or white), durable and lightweight Heavy stones, often 40 carats or more

Cocktail rings gained popularity in the 1920s, especially among American women who wore them as symbols of freedom, personal identity, and social presence—often paired with revealing outfits and bold make-up.

Ronaldo, now 40, had hinted at marriage much earlier, particularly in Georgina’s Netflix docu-series I Am Georgina, where he had said: “When the right moment comes, it will happen.”

That long-awaited moment has now seemingly arrived. On 11 August, Georgina proudly displayed a dazzling emerald-cut diamond ring on her left hand. The brilliance of the piece immediately caught the public eye, but equally captivating was her heartfelt caption: “Yes, I do. In this life and in all my other lives.”

Following the picture’s release, speculation quickly grew over the weight and price of the ring. Jewellery experts estimate it weighs between 10 and 15 carats and is valued at no less than $1 million (USD).

Journalist Alberto Guzmán further revealed that Ronaldo’s generosity extended well beyond the ring.
