A cultural activist, Shamim Ashraf (38), was arrested in Mymensingh on Monday evening for allegedly posting derogatory comments about religion on Facebook.
The arrest took place around 9:30 pm from the Amlapara area, carried out by the District Police’s Detective Branch (DB), according to police sources.
Authorities allege that Shamim Ashraf responded to a comment made by a user named Shamim Chowdhury on his Facebook post with a remark considered insulting to religion. The post went viral on Monday afternoon, prompting widespread calls on social media for Shamim Ashraf’s arrest and legal action.
Before his arrest, another post appeared on Shamim Ashraf’s page, stating: “If my comment has hurt anyone, I hope it will be seen with forgiveness and compassion.”
Mahidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of the District DB (South), said: “Shamim Ashraf made offensive remarks. His actions on social media caused a disorderly environment due to religious insult. A case has been filed in this matter.”
Shamim Ashraf has been handed over to the local police station and will be produced before the court for further proceedings.
