Australia has named its 15-man squad for the Boxing Day Test against England, but the absence of captain Pat Cummins and veteran spinner Nathan Lyon marks a significant blow for the hosts.
Steve Smith will assume leadership in Cummins’ absence, bringing experience and tactical acumen to guide the side. Cummins had recently returned from a back injury, but Australia’s coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that the pacer will be rested for the remainder of the Ashes series to avoid further risk.
Nathan Lyon, meanwhile, has been ruled out after requiring surgery on a hamstring injury sustained on his right leg. The procedure is expected to sideline the off-spinner for an extended period. Todd Murphy has been drafted into the squad as Lyon’s replacement.
Returning to the squad following injury is pace bowler Jhye Richardson, who is also being considered as a potential deputy to Cummins. Despite not featuring in the Adelaide Test, Michael Neser, Beau Webster, and Brendan Doggett have been retained, providing additional depth to the bowling and all-round options.
Australia has already secured the Ashes with a comprehensive 82-run victory over England in Adelaide, leading the series 3–0. The teams will now face off at the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the traditional Boxing Day Test on 26 December, where Australia will aim to finish the series on a high note in front of a packed home crowd.
