DC Sarwar Alam Brings Hope Over Dhaka–Sylhet Highway Expansion

The long-awaited Dhaka–Sylhet highway expansion project, aimed at upgrading the route into a six-lane thoroughfare, was officially launched in 2021. However, even after four years, the project has seen very limited progress.

Although approximately 830 acres of land are required for acquisition, only 15 per cent has been secured so far. Consequently, the highway that was envisioned to connect the capital with Sylhet through a modern six-lane road remains a cause of severe hardship for commuters.

Due to the complications of land acquisition at multiple points, the highway has become almost unfit for smooth travel. Journeys from Sylhet to Dhaka now often take as long as 14–15 hours.

Amidst this grim reality, the newly appointed Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sylhet, Md Sarwar Alam, expressed optimism. While inspecting the Sylhet Central Bus Terminal on Tuesday, he told journalists:
“The delay in the Dhaka–Sylhet highway project is mainly due to land acquisition complications. However, the land acquisition process for the Sylhet section will be completed within two to three months. We hope the project work will begin in full swing within the next five to six months.”

According to project sources, the Dhaka–Sylhet six-lane development project covers a total length of 209 kilometres, with an estimated cost of Tk 17,000 crore. To complete the expansion, 829.83 acres of land across seven districts must be acquired.

The project was initially scheduled for completion in 2026. However, given the slow pace of progress, there are growing concerns that the deadline may have to be extended.
