The death toll from violent anti-corruption protests in Nepal has risen to 51, police confirmed on Friday, as the full extent of the chaos that toppled the government becomes clearer.

Police spokesperson Binod Ghimire reported: "51 people have died so far this week in the protests, including at least 21 protesters and three policemen."

The unrest has also seen a massive prisoner breakout, with over 12,500 inmates fleeing multiple jails across the country. Many were killed during or after their escape in clashes with security forces.
