Defeated by a Margin of 5,000 Votes: Mirza Abbas Secures Victory Over Nasiruddin Patwari

In a closely contested battle in the Dhaka-8 constituency, Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed, the candidate representing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has been declared the unofficial winner, defeating his nearest rival, Nasiruddin Patwari of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), by a margin of 5,239 votes.

The results were announced in the early hours of Friday, around 3:45 am, by Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, the Divisional Commissioner of Dhaka, who served as the Returning Officer for the constituency. According to the official announcement, votes were cast at 108 out of 109 polling centres in the constituency.

With the addition of postal votes, Mirza Abbas secured a total of 59,366 votes, comfortably surpassing Nasiruddin Patwari, who received 54,127 votes. This result confirms a victory margin of 5,239 votes for the BNP candidate.

Other candidates in the race, including Kefayet Ullah Hatpakha of Islami Andolan Bangladesh and Meghna Alam of Ganadhikar Parishad, received 1,436 and 608 votes respectively.

Voter Turnout and Postal Voting

Dhaka-8 has a total of 275,474 registered voters, of which 120,484 ballots were cast, resulting in an overall voter turnout of approximately 43.7%. Among the votes cast, 2,817 were rejected, leaving 117,667 valid votes.

Postal voting in the constituency involved 8,992 registered postal voters, of whom 6,012 ballots were cast. Of these, 320 votes were rejected, highlighting a relatively high participation rate among postal voters.

The Dhaka-8 contest was closely observed, reflecting both intense competition and the electorate’s active engagement. The victory of Mirza Abbas consolidates BNP’s position in the constituency, while the results also indicate a clear preference gap between the two leading candidates.
