The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a cautionary advisory for boat operators, warning that dense fog across the nation’s river basins may significantly reduce visibility, potentially disrupting routine navigation. The alert urges vessels to exercise heightened caution while navigating inland waterways.
The warning, effective from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday, 2 February, specifically targets the country’s internal river ports. According to the forecast, light to moderate fog is expected in many riverine areas, with visibility dropping to approximately 400 metres, and in some locations, potentially even lower.
Despite the reduced visibility, the meteorological department clarified that no official signalling or alerts will be issued to indicate these fog conditions. Instead, the advisory serves as a precautionary measure to encourage vigilance among boat operators, particularly during early morning hours when fog density is typically at its peak.
The department highlighted that navigation in fog-prone areas requires slower speeds, heightened awareness of surrounding vessels, and careful adherence to safety protocols. In addition, operators are advised to make use of navigational aids, including horns and lights, to communicate presence and prevent accidents in low-visibility conditions.
For convenience, the key details of the advisory are summarised below:
| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|

Officials stressed that while no formal warnings or signals will be issued, vessel operators must remain alert and exercise prudence when traversing fog-affected waters. Past incidents during dense fog have shown that even experienced operators can face difficulties, underscoring the importance of vigilance and adherence to maritime safety guidelines.
With winter conditions contributing to fog formation across the country, authorities continue to monitor weather patterns closely, ensuring that further updates and advisories are disseminated to safeguard river traffic and prevent accidents.
