Despite it being a regular weekly holiday, banks across Bangladesh will remain open today. This decision has been announced by Bangladesh Bank in an official statement issued on Wednesday, 24 December.
According to the announcement, the unusual opening of all scheduled banks is intended to facilitate financial transactions related to the upcoming Thirteenth Parliamentary Election. Specifically, the move allows candidates to deposit nomination paper fees and purchase voter list CDs using bank drafts, pay orders, or treasury challans.
The schedule for the election process stipulates that the submission of nomination papers concludes on 29 December. To ensure candidates can meet this deadline without delay, Bangladesh Bank has directed all scheduled banks to operate today, Saturday, 27 December.
Bangladesh Bank emphasised that this special arrangement is in line with ensuring smooth electoral preparations. Candidates and election officials are being urged to utilise the opportunity responsibly and complete all required transactions promptly.
This measure follows a series of recent holidays. On 25 December, banks were closed for Christmas Day, and yesterday, Friday, was the regular weekly holiday. Today’s opening, therefore, is a temporary adjustment to accommodate the electoral process.
For clarity, the schedule of relevant dates and bank operations around this period is summarised below:
| Date | Day | Bank Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 December 2025 | Wednesday | Closed | Christmas Day |
| 26 December 2025 | Thursday | Open | Regular working day |
| 27 December 2025 | Saturday | Open | Special opening for election-related transactions |
| 28 December 2025 | Sunday | Closed | Regular weekly holiday |
| 29 December 2025 | Monday | Open | Last day for submission of parliamentary nomination papers |
Bank officials have urged the public and election candidates to prepare the necessary documentation and funds in advance, to avoid last-minute congestion. The arrangement underscores the crucial role of the banking system in facilitating timely electoral processes, ensuring fairness and transparency.
By keeping banks open on this weekly holiday, Bangladesh Bank aims to provide both convenience and efficiency, balancing public service obligations with the administrative needs of the national election.
