A tragic and shocking incident marred the second day of the 12th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. Just moments before the start of the match, Mahbub Ali Zaki, the assistant coach of Dhaka Capitals, suddenly fell ill and, despite urgent medical attention, tragically lost his life.

The match, featuring Dhaka Capitals versus Rajshahi Warriors, was scheduled to start in approximately 20 minutes. Players from both teams were warming up near their respective dressing rooms, accompanied by coaching staff. During the practice session, Zaki collapsed unexpectedly on the field. His colleagues immediately rushed to his aid.

Promptly, CPR was administered on-site before Zaki was rushed by ambulance to Al Haramain Hospital in Sylhet, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition. Despite the doctors’ relentless efforts, Zaki succumbed to a heart attack, sending shockwaves throughout the domestic cricket community.

Witnesses present at the stadium described the scene as profoundly distressing. Mahbub Ali Zaki had served as a coach in Bangladesh’s domestic cricket for many years, nurturing numerous young cricketers and contributing significantly to the development of the sport. His sudden death has cast a sombre shadow over the tournament and the broader cricket fraternity.

Despite the heartbreaking event, the match proceeded as scheduled. Dhaka Capitals’ captain Mohammad Mithun won the toss and opted to bowl first against Rajshahi.
