Dhaka Footpaths Cleared from Malibagh to Rampura

In a major effort to ease traffic congestion and ensure pedestrian safety, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Traffic Division conducted a comprehensive clearance operation along the thoroughfare from Malibagh Rail Gate to Rampura Kacha Bazar on Saturday, 4 April.

The operation, which ran from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., targeted illegal encroachments on both sides of the road, particularly small shops that had long occupied the footpaths. Officers demolished these unauthorised establishments and seized various items that were obstructing public passage.

Action Taken During Operation

Type of Action Number / Details Remarks
Illegal shops cleared Multiple small shops along the footpaths Long-standing encroachments removed
Items seized Goods and merchandise from shops Ensured free movement for pedestrians
Fines imposed 5,000–10,000 Taka per shop For placing items on footpaths
Vehicles dealt with Several mini-trucks and motorcycles illegally parked Legal action initiated against owners

Special Metropolitan Magistrate Mahidur Rahman, who supervised the operation, stated that a public notice had been issued on 23 March, warning business owners to vacate the footpaths. “Many complied following the notice, but those who remained were cautioned and subject to fines for obstructing pedestrian pathways,” he said.

The Traffic Division’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Motijheel, representing the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, emphasised that the clearance is part of a broader initiative to restore order on city roads. “Our mission is to reclaim footpaths and roads from illegal occupation, ensuring smooth movement for both pedestrians and vehicles. This operation will continue across other congested areas as well,” he added.

Local residents and commuters welcomed the initiative, noting that encroachment by small shops and illegal parking has long been a source of traffic snarls and pedestrian hazards. By removing obstacles and enforcing fines, the authorities aim to create safer, more navigable streets while gradually instilling discipline among shopkeepers and motorists alike.

The operation also serves as a reminder of the city administration’s commitment to regular monitoring and strict enforcement, signalling that Dhaka’s efforts to reduce congestion and improve pedestrian safety are ongoing and will be sustained.
