Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have intensified enforcement across the capital, filing a total of 406 cases against motorists for breaching traffic regulations in a single day. The action forms part of the authority’s continuing drive to improve road discipline and reduce congestion in one of South Asia’s most densely populated cities.
According to an official statement issued on Sunday, 8 February, by the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, the cases were registered during coordinated traffic operations conducted on Saturday, 7 February, in multiple areas of Dhaka. Traffic officials said the enforcement campaign targeted a wide range of violations, including illegal parking, unauthorised stopping, lane discipline breaches, and non-compliance with vehicle documentation requirements.
Data released by the DMP show that offences involved a broad mix of vehicles, notably buses, trucks, covered vans, CNG-powered auto-rickshaws, and motorcycles. Motorcycles accounted for a significant share of the violations, reflecting ongoing concerns about reckless riding, lack of helmets, and disregard for traffic signals.
The Motijheel Traffic Division recorded the highest number of cases, while other key divisions such as Mirpur, Ramna, Wari, Uttara, and Gulshan also reported substantial enforcement activity. Officials noted that enforcement was not limited to issuing fines alone; vehicles found obstructing roads or violating parking rules were removed to restore traffic flow.
In addition to filing cases, traffic police impounded 185 vehicles through dumping operations and towed away a further 101 vehicles using wreckers. These measures, the DMP said, are essential to deter habitual offenders and to send a clear message that traffic laws will be enforced consistently.
Below is a breakdown of the cases by traffic division and vehicle category:
| Traffic Division | Buses | Trucks | Covered Vans | CNGs | Motorcycles | Total Cases |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ramna | 1 | 1 | 5 | 2 | 16 | 47 |
| Lalbagh | – | 3 | – | 4 | 25 | 36 |

| Gulshan | 1 | 2 | – | 1 | 8 | 39 |

Senior traffic officials reiterated that such operations will continue on a regular basis to ensure compliance with traffic laws and to enhance public safety. The DMP urged motorists to follow regulations voluntarily, warning that strict action will be taken against those who undermine road discipline in the metropolitan area.
