Meghmallar Basu, President of the Dhaka University branch of the Student Union, reportedly attempted suicide on Friday, prompting his immediate admission to Sohrawardy Medical College Hospital in a critical state.
The alarming incident was confirmed by Zaber Ahmed Jubel, General Secretary of the Revolutionary Students’ Unity. Jubel stated that Basu had deliberately harmed himself, necessitating urgent medical attention.
Basu was admitted to the hospital around midday on Friday. Medical staff at Sohrawardy have since stabilised his condition, and he is currently under close observation. Jubel emphasised that, although Basu’s health has improved, the reasons behind his drastic action remain unclear. “We cannot yet ascertain why he attempted suicide,” he said, urging the public and media to respect the privacy of the student and his family during this distressing time.
Meghmallar Basu is a prominent figure in Dhaka University’s student politics, having held the leadership position in the Student Union. His role has often placed him at the centre of campus political activities, which can be intensely stressful. While no official statement has been released regarding potential pressures or underlying causes, student leaders are appealing for calm and understanding from peers and the public.
